Understanding the role
A McKenzie Friend provides vital assistance so you never have to stand alone before a judge. While I am not a qualified solicitor or barrister, I offer practical and emotional support to ensure you stay calm, organised, and heard.
What a McKenzie Friend can do in court
- Offer moral support: Provide a calming presence by your side during stressful court sessions.
- Take notes: Record key details and remarks from the judge and the other party so you can focus entirely on listening.
- Organise paperwork: Keep your court bundle, statements, and evidence in order so you can locate essential documents instantly.
- Quiet advice: Whisper reminders, clarify procedural points, and help you prepare what you wish to say during breaks.
What a McKenzie Friend cannot do in court
- Act as a legal representative: Provide formal legal advice or run the case on your behalf.
- Speak in court: Address the judge or examine witnesses directly, unless the Judge or bench of Magistrates grants rare and exceptional permission.
- Sign court documents: File formal applications or sign legal paperwork in your name.
